The population of Bhutan is composed of four primary ethnic groups: Bhutia, Sharchops, Nepali, and a variety of indigenous communities. These groups are distinguished by differences in language, religion, and socioeconomic traits. The largest group, the Bhutia, are direct descendants of Tibetans and primarily reside in northern and central Bhutan. Like most Bhutanese, the Bhutia speak Tibeto-Burman languages and follow Buddhism, which shares close ties with Tibetan Buddhism.
