Clothing and Packing

<yellow-tag>Clothing</yellow-tag> and Packing

Please refer to the temperature guide for expected highs and lows at the key locations on your tour. We recommend packing practical clothing for both warm and cool climates based on the season. Keep in mind that temperatures can vary significantly due to altitude and unpredictable weather, so it’s best to be well-prepared!

Clothing should be simple and layered, allowing you to add or remove items as the temperature fluctuates throughout the day. In the mountains, night temperatures can often drop below freezing during autumn, so warm clothing is essential. Summer days can be hot, so light, breathable cotton clothing is advisable. It’s also recommended to bring good wet-weather gear during the rainy season. A warm windbreaker and sturdy, comfortable shoes are especially important.

Daypack:

Your daypack should be large enough to carry a 1-liter water bottle along with all the other items you’ll need for the day. Carry this pack with you and ensure it contains the following essentials:

  • Necessary medications
  • Camera, sunglasses, and a hat
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Any other personal items you might need throughout the day

Essential Items to Bring:

  • Long-sleeved shirt, long pants, and a hat to wear whenever outside, to protect against insect-borne illnesses (such as malaria, dengue, and filariasis).
  • Insect repellent with DEET.
  • Iodine tablets or a portable water filter to purify water if bottled water is not available.
  • Sunblock, sunglasses, and a hat for protection from UV rays.
  • A folding umbrella, especially if traveling during the monsoon season (mid-June to late September), when rain is frequent.
  • Earplugs (and spares) for a peaceful night's sleep.
  • A torch (flashlight) to keep by your bed, as occasional power outages occur.
  • A Swiss-style army knife or a folding utility tool, such as a Leatherman, if you prefer. Be sure to pack it in your check-in luggage due to air travel regulations.
  • A small alarm clock if you need help waking up, as not all hotel rooms have telephones or wake-up services.

Note: Our guides will ensure you are on time for every activity, so there’s no need to worry about being late!

Hiking Boots

If your itinerary includes hiking, a good pair of boots is essential. Make sure your boots are well-broken-in before your trip—ill-fitting boots can ruin your trek. If you're buying a new pair, opt for medium-weight boots made of fabric or a fabric/leather combination with a waterproof, breathable membrane like Gore-Tex. They should offer solid ankle support while being comfortable around the Achilles area (look for a notch at the top of the rear ankle for extra comfort).

When trying on boots, wear thick woolen socks to ensure you get the correct fit. Avoid short boots, as they can cause painful toe jamming during long, steep descents. Be sure to walk up and down an incline in the store to check for comfort and fit before making your purchase.

Footwear

We recommend walking shoes/boots, as comfortable shoes with good ankle support will make all walking more enjoyable. If your trip does not involve hiking/trekking and you do not own a pair of hiking boots, then trainers/sneakers will suffice.

Toiletries

Everything you normally use for your days in the city and do not forget sun lotions.

Considerations for Women

  • Hand wipes: The kind that are in a roll that comes in a plastic container with a flip-top. Take them out of the container and put them in a Ziploc®.
  • Tampons and extra Ziploc bags for disposal and carryout.
