Weather
Nepal's climate varies significantly due to its diverse geography. In the north, summers are mild, but winters can be extremely harsh, whereas the southern plains experience a subtropical climate with hot summers and mild winters. The country is largely influenced by the monsoon, which brings rainfall between June and September, except for regions in the rain-shadow, such as Mustang, which has a dry climate similar to the Tibetan plateau.
The transition from the subtropical lowlands of the Terai to the alpine conditions of the Himalayas occurs within a span of just 200 kilometers, leading to distinct climatic variations. The Terai, Nepal’s hottest region, can experience summer temperatures exceeding 45°C, with a humid and tropical environment. In the mid-hill regions, including Kathmandu Valley, summers are moderate, with temperatures ranging between 25°C and 27°C.
Winter temperatures also vary greatly, ranging from 7°C to 23°C in the Terai, while the hilly and mountainous areas can experience sub-zero temperatures, going as low as -30°C in the high-altitude Himalayan regions. Kathmandu Valley enjoys a relatively mild climate, with summer temperatures averaging between 19°C and 27°C and winter temperatures ranging from 2°C to 12°C.
