Clothing/Packing

Clothing/Packing

Please refer to the temperature guide for a general overview of the expected highs and lows. It’s recommended that you pack a practical selection of clothing suitable for both warm and cool climates based on the season. However, please keep in mind that this guide is just a reference, and you may experience a range of temperatures during your journey due to altitude changes and unpredictable weather. Therefore, it’s best to be prepared!

Clothing should be simple and consist of layers that can be added or removed as temperatures fluctuate throughout the day. In autumn, mountain nights often drop below freezing, so warm clothing is essential. During summer, days can be quite hot, requiring lighter cotton clothing. It’s also recommended to bring quality wet-weather gear, especially during the rainy months. A warm windbreaker and sturdy, comfortable shoes are highly suggested.

Daypack: Your daypack should be large enough to carry a 1-liter water bottle and all the items you’ll need throughout the day. Keep this with you at all times. Essentials to include are:

  • Necessary medication
  • Camera, sunglasses, and a hat
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Any other personal items required for the day

Additional essentials to pack:

  • Long-sleeved shirt, long pants, and a hat to protect yourself from insect-borne diseases (e.g., malaria, dengue, filariasis, leishmaniasis, onchocerciasis).
  • Insect repellent with DEET.
  • Iodine tablets and portable water filters to purify water if bottled water is unavailable.
  • Sunblock, sunglasses, and a hat for UV protection.
  • A folding umbrella if traveling during the monsoon season (mid-June to late September). Rain is possible at any time, and almost certain from June to August.
  • Earplugs (and spares) for a good night’s sleep.
  • A flashlight, as occasional power outages are common in the country.
  • A Swiss army knife is handy, but due to airport security concerns, consider a folding utility tool (like a Leatherman) and pack it in your checked luggage.
  • A small alarm clock if needed, as not all hotel rooms provide wake-up service or phones.

Note: Our guides will ensure you are never late for any scheduled activities.

Hiking Boots

If your itinerary includes hiking, this is a crucial item on your packing list. Ensure your boots are well broken-in before the trek—ill-fitting boots can make your hike uncomfortable and unpleasant. When purchasing new boots, opt for medium-weight ones made of fabric or a fabric-leather blend, featuring a waterproof, breathable membrane like Gore-Tex. The boots should offer solid ankle support while remaining comfortable around the Achilles area (look for a notch at the top of the rear ankle). When trying on boots, wear thick woolen socks to ensure a proper fit. Be cautious with short boots, as they can press painfully on your toes during long, steep descents. To check for comfort, make sure to walk up and down an incline in the store.

Footwear

We recommend walking shoes or boots with good ankle support for maximum comfort during walks. If your trip doesn't include hiking or trekking and you don’t have hiking boots, trainers or sneakers will work just fine.

Toiltetries

Everything you normally use for your days in the city and do not forget sun lotions.

Considerations for Women

  • Hand wipes: The kind that are in a roll that comes in a plastic container with a flip-top. Take them out of the container and put them in a Ziploc®.
  • Tampons and extra Ziploc bags for disposal and carryout.

Baggage Allowance

You will be allowed to check in a total of 44 pounds or 20 kgs per person. So we encourage you to travel light, packing only one duffel bag or a suitcase. The hotels you will be staying in are well equipped with all basic essentials. Pack an extra duffel bag to bring back purchases if you want.
